The Resurgence of Wallpaper

It’s said that Fashion is cyclic in nature. Trends that are in vogue today, fade away tomorrow, then make a comeback again after a few decades. A case in point is Wallpaper. Once dismissed as ho-hum or mundane, there is a resurgence of wallpaper in new and interesting avatars.

Wallpaper has an interesting history of over 300 years in the US. Stationery and cloth merchants in New England states imported or pieced together wallpaper from materials such as paper, leather, silk, wool, or velvet turning them into intricate designs. Needless to say, they were expensive. With time, wallpaper became popular and manufacturers had to factor production needs for a large number of people across various budget-ranges.

That is when wallpaper morphed into standard, templated designs that could be manufactured easily, sold as rolls, and applied by qualified applicators. So, till a decade back, wallpaper evoked impressions such as ‘cheap’, ‘mundane’, ‘boring’ and an inexpensive replacement for costly wall paint.

All this has changed now thanks to computers and Printing Technology. Today, graphic designers use sophisticated software and high-end digital printers to create wallpaper with complex patterns, intricate designs and multiple color tones. Many of them work exclusively on Wallpaper designs, creating a new breed of ‘Wallpaper Designers’.

So what are the reasons for the renewed interest in Wallpaper?

  • Make small spaces look bigger: The right color and design of wallpaper can be used to expand a small space such as washroom, powder-room, closet, nook or niche in the home.

  • To Make a Fashion Statement: Wallpaper can complement the design, layout, external views and existing furniture to create a grand design statement.

  • Attempt bold concepts: Small walls, columns, niches, small porches, and small bathrooms are ideal for a shockingly bold design in bright colors that can become the highlight in an enclosure.

  • For cost-effective transformation: Radical paint designs are costly to apply or replace. In contrast, wallpaper can be applied or scraped off quickly, and a new design laid on, without burning a hole in your pocket.

  • Brighten up an enclosure: Tight spaces sandwiched between high walls, or areas with poor natural light can be brightened up with the right color and design of wallpaper. A classy design for the wallpaper can even make such spaces look sophisticated.

  • Is less disruptive: Wallpapers in subtle designs and muted colors can complement the existing color palette of an enclosure, like the kitchen, and give it a unique identity.

  • To create warmth and welcome: Foyers and verandas of homes are what make the first impression on guests. The right wallpaper used here can create an inviting feel.

  • Use photographs instead of available designs: One can download large photographs from the Internet and provide them to wallpaper designers who will recreate the same as wallpaper, in different hues.

  • Mirrors and Paintings complement it: As with a painted wall, the right mirror, painting, clock or wall-hanging can complement the wallpaper and create an interesting effect.

  • Embellishments for special effects: Wallpapers are no longer two-dimensional sheets of paper or vinyl. Designers are adding sand, gold leaves, recycled glass pieces, glass beads and silver crystals to the base material to give an embossed or glossy effect to the wall.

  • Wallpapers can be tactile: Artisans and printing technology are coming together to create wallpapers that have a sculpted look for a unique touch-and-feel effect.

  • Wallpapers can also be Luxurious: Celebrity designers are using a combination of materials to paint or inlay complex patters or photographs into the wall for a rich and luxurious effect.
In short, wallpaper can combinedly accomplish what paint, sculpture, furnishings and artifacts achieve exclusively, but at a much lesser cost. In the process, it can replace these elements and simplify the decor. So, the next time you are planning to redo or renovate your living spaces, think of Wallpaper!
