What Our Clients Say

"We have worked with several contractors over the course of our 30 years as home owners. None has come close to the professionalism and quality of design Daniel Mackey Construction offered us on our recent remodeling project. Most contractors leave you with a sense that a shoe will drop and it does, but with Dan and Debbie there are no surprises, and that is extremely comforting."

- Lucy Helveston

"Dan and his team worked very hard to meet all of our expectations. We have used them on large (Exterior remodel including stucco, gutters, window and painting and Interior remodel including bathroom, painting, drywall, plumbing) and small (urgent plumbing needs, fencing quotes, etc.) They are professional, knowledgeable and quick to respond. Dan is hands-on and works to make things how we want them."

- Ronda Heiser

Remodeling Tips To Make Your Home Healthy

COVID 19 will be controlled – to that, there is no doubt. However, once the pandemic is over, we should not ever let our guard down again. Like charity, good health starts at home. This is the time to think of making homes healthier and a remodel is the right time to do it. Here are a few ideas too consider and discuss with your home remodeling expert.

Indoor Air Quality

Ensuring that a home is free of common health hazards is part of every professional home remodeler’s job. This means making sure the home is free from mold, lead paint, asbestos, volatile chemicals, pesticide residue and possible high levels of electromagnetic radiation. The HVAC system must be given a thorough cleaning and no chemical residue must be left behind. Air filters must be replaced by high-efficiency ones. Upgrading the heating to a masonry heater or hydronic radiant heating is an option well worth consideration.

Carpets and rugs may add a lot to the look and appeal of a home, but they are great traps for dust and bacteria. Limiting the use of carpets by putting in elegant natural hardwood flooring will help to keep the house healthier. The use of non-porous and antimicrobial surfaces and hardware is a good option as they trap fewer germs and cleaning them does not require the use of harsh toxic chemicals. This is especially important in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Sunlight is a natural disinfectant, so it makes sense to ensure that maximizing the entry of natural daylight is an important part of a remodel.

Green Building Materials
Using green building materials in a home remodel is not simply good for the planet. Hazardous materials are not used in their manufacture or to protect them and increase the lifespan. This means that there is no chance of the chemicals leaching out and entering the bodies of those who live in the home.

Adding Space

A home is a place for the family to be together, but that does not mean that a lack of space causes people to get in each other's way. Giving family members their own space, as far as possible, is good for everyone and will help to slow down the spread of coughs, colds etc. in the home. A home remodeling professional will be able to give you ideas on creating space such as changing room sizes and/or layouts, converting wasted attics and basement into usable areas or putting in additions.

Cleaning a home is a repetitive and tiresome job. It is also essential for the health of the occupants. There are often design or décor features that homeowners want to be included in their remodeling projects. At times, these features may be difficult to clean and become places where grime and disease spreading vectors reside, despite the best cleaning efforts of the homeowners. When planning a home remodel, look at all nonessential aspects of the project, especially those which are appearance or style-related, to consider maintenance and cleaning issues. A design-build home remodeling contractor will be able to give you the guidance you need.

A Healthy Dream Home

The concept of that dream home will change. While design, comfort, security, space, décor and other factors will continue to dictate the kind of homes people want, making a home healthy will join the list. At Daniel Mackey Construction we are known for creating dream homes and the long list of delighted clients we have built up over the last 30 plus years is testimony to our dedication to meeting client requirements. Making homes healthy for the families who live in them has always been a priority for us. Dan Mackey himself is a Certified Green Building Professional and has been instrumental in developing a green building education program for the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Green remodeling is not only about being resource conservation and sustainability. Ensuring indoor air quality and creating an overall healthy living environment is fundamental to green construction.
